Suitable for: Staff with specific responsibilities for dealing
with fire safety within their place of work
Aim: To create an awareness of the nature
of fire and an understanding of the responsibilities and appropriate actions
of a fire Warden/Marshal.
Duration: 2 - 4 hours (morning or afternoon)
Overview:
• An explanation of fire legislation, relevant to their workplace
and an explanation of fire and smoke spread.
• Video presentations on fire safety, escape routes, the role of
the Fire Warden/Marshal and a discussion with the students on general
awareness of fire at work, in the home and at leisure.
• The contents and objectives of fire procedures.
• A full explanation of types of extinguishers, their identification,
uses, and implications of inappropriate use.
• Practical scenarios for the students to practice extinguishing
fire with the various types of extinguisher.
• Behavioural patterns of people involved in fire situations.
Learning
outcome:
• Understand some of the most common causes of fire, principal hazards
and basic fire safety techniques.
• Be able to identify the correct actions to take on hearing the
fire alarm or discovering a fire.
• Be able to identify the different types of extinguisher and select
which type is suitable for different fires.
• Be able to use firefighting equipment in small-scale controlled
fire situations.
• Demonstrate knowledge of health and safety issues in dealing with
a fire.
• Have basic understanding of the relevant fire safety legislation.
• Be familiar with the responsibilities of a fire warden, before
and during a fire, including the use of escape routes, assembly points
and passing of details to the Fire Service.
